Gibsons are either famous or notorious for wild variance in quality control. There are real good ones, and there are really-not-so-good ones. This one is a really-really good one. All of that lovely fat compression that made this guitar famous. With many guitars, you hit them harder and they get louder, natch. This one does that to a certain point, and then it gets wider, thicker. More delicious.
